Euro 2010: GB Ready for Austria Challenge

GREAT Britain Women take on Austria at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena on Wednesday evening, as their Euro 2010 campaign enters its final week.

The team arrived in Glasgow boosted by a good performance in a training tournament in Spain, and will be keen to keep that form going against Austria and then France in Lille on Sunday in their final match of the Euro 2010 group stages.

The GB squad - captained by Scotland’s Lynn McCafferty, pictured - will be out for revenge following the 30-20 defeat they suffered in Austria last year.

The match in Glasgow is a crucial one for Austria, who suffered a shock defeat to Iceland in their opening clash of the competition.

Anything less than a win for Austria will mean they cannot progress to the next stage of the European Championships.

Hailing from Cumbernauld, Lynn said: “The Austria match will be an extra special one for me, it is really exciting to be playing in Scotland.

“I know that the handball players in Scotland have been waiting a long time for this and it will be a great experience for them.

“It is hard not to get a buzz when you’re playing at home and the people coming to watch are just getting better and better, more enthusiastic and more of a motivation.

“Our head coach Jesper asked me if I will be more nervous at this match than any other, and I can honestly say no. I am more proud than anything and I just want our family, friends and the people who have come to watch to enjoy the match and see how much we have progressed.”

Following the Austria match, GB travel to Lille to play France, and Lynn added: “France will by far be the most difficult game of the qualifiers.

“We will play our own game and play for a better result than last time! What else can you say when you are going to play the silver medallists from the last world championships!”
